The Real Vehicle: WWII History

The Jagdpanther - officially the Panzerjäger V - was the most capable tank destroyer Germany produced during World War II. Built on the proven Panther chassis and armed with the lethal 88mm Pak 43/3 L/71 gun, it combined excellent mobility, a low silhouette, and devastating firepower in a package that Allied tank crews universally feared. At the ranges it preferred to engage, the Jagdpanther could destroy any Allied or Soviet vehicle it encountered.

At the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, Jagdpanthers spearheaded German armored thrusts through the Ardennes, using their 88mm guns to devastating effect against American armor. On the Eastern Front, they were deployed specifically to counter the Soviet IS-2 Stalin heavy tanks and T-34/85s that had been pushing German forces back since Kursk. In skilled hands, a single Jagdpanther could hold a defensive position against forces many times its number.

Only around 415 Jagdpanthers were ever built - a fraction of the Tiger or Panther production numbers - making it a relatively rare vehicle even by the end of the war. That rarity and its formidable combat record have made it one of the most sought-after subjects for scale modelers and RC tank enthusiasts. It remains the definitive German tank destroyer of World War II.
