The Panzer III Ausf. H was Germany's primary medium tank during the crucial early years of World War II. Introduced in 1940 and armed with the 50mm KwK 38 L/42 cannon, it was the main striking vehicle of the Panzer divisions that tore through France in six weeks, then drove thousands of miles into the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa in 1941. The Ausf. H variant added bolt-on supplemental armor plates to improve protection against increasingly effective Allied anti-tank weapons.

In North Africa, Panzer III Ausf. H tanks formed the core of Rommel's Afrika Korps, fighting across Libya and Egypt in the brutal conditions of desert warfare. Their combination of speed, reliability, and firepower made them well-suited to the open terrain and fluid, fast-moving engagements that characterized the desert campaign. Rommel's crews developed great confidence in the vehicle and used it aggressively to punch far beyond what conventional military doctrine would have suggested.
