The Real Tank: WWII & Korea History
Named after General John J. Pershing - the commander of American forces in World War I - the M26 was America's belated answer to the German Tiger and Panther. Armed with a powerful 90mm M3 gun and significantly heavier armor than the Sherman it replaced, the Pershing could finally engage Germany's best tanks on more equal terms. It arrived in Europe in early 1945, just in time for the final push into Germany.
In one of the most famous tank engagements of the war, a single M26 Pershing dueled with a German Panther near Cologne in March 1945 - destroying it in a confrontation filmed by a combat cameraman and seen around the world. The footage demonstrated exactly what the Pershing brought to the fight: firepower and armor that American crews had lacked throughout the war.
The Pershing went on to serve extensively in the Korean War, where it again proved its worth against Soviet-supplied T-34/85s. Its influence on post-war American tank design was profound - it formed the bridge between the Sherman era and the M48/M60 Patton series that defined American armor through the Cold War. The M26 Pershing remains one of the most significant American tanks ever built.
