Named after General Walton Walker - the commander of the U.S. Eighth Army in Korea - the M41 Walker Bulldog was developed in the late 1940s as America's answer to a new generation of fast, capable light tanks. Armed with a 76mm gun and capable of speeds up to 45 mph, it was designed to outrun and outmaneuver heavier opponents while providing reconnaissance and fire support to infantry.
The Walker Bulldog entered service just in time for the Korean War, where it proved invaluable in the mountainous terrain of the peninsula. Its combination of speed, reliable firepower, and relatively light weight allowed it to operate in areas where heavier tanks couldn't go. It went on to serve in dozens of armies around the world through the Cold War era, seeing action in Vietnam, the Middle East, and South America.
By bridging the gap between WWII-era light tanks and modern main battle tank concepts, the Walker Bulldog helped define what a post-war light armored vehicle could be. It remained in active service in some countries well into the 1980s - nearly 40 years after its introduction - a testament to the fundamental soundness of its design.
