What Makes It Special
The Real Tank: WWII History
Named after Joseph Stalin, the JS-2 was the Soviet Union's definitive answer to the German Tiger and Panther. Introduced in 1944, it was built for one purpose: to break through the most heavily armored German positions and destroy their best tanks. Its 122mm D-25T gun could penetrate the frontal armor of a Tiger 1 at 1,500 meters - a feat few Allied weapons could match.
The JS-2's sloped armor made it remarkably resistant to enemy fire, while its sheer firepower made it the most feared Soviet heavy tank of the war. It spearheaded major offensive operations across the Eastern Front, including the decisive battles that led to the fall of Berlin in April and May 1945. JS-2s were among the first Soviet tanks to enter the German capital.
After the war, the JS-2 continued to serve in the Soviet Army and was exported to numerous allies, seeing action in the Korean War, the Middle East, and Cuba. It remained in active service in some countries into the 1990s - a testament to the fundamental soundness of its design. Today it stands as one of the most iconic heavy tanks of the 20th century.
