The Real Tank: WWII History

The Panzer VI Ausf. B - the King Tiger - was Germany's answer to the increasingly effective Allied armor of 1943. Armed with the devastating 88mm KwK 43 L/71 gun, it could penetrate the armor of any Allied tank at combat range. Its frontal armor measured up to 200mm thick, making it virtually impenetrable to most weapons of the time.

First seeing combat during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, the King Tiger with Henschel turret became one of the most feared vehicles on any front. Allied tankers and anti-tank crews knew that a frontal engagement was near-suicidal. It earned a legendary status that has endured for over 80 years.

Despite its fearsome reputation, the King Tiger faced practical challenges - its sheer weight strained bridges and mechanical systems, and Allied air superiority limited its operational range. But in a one-on-one engagement, there was nothing on the Allied side that could match it. It remains the definitive symbol of late-war German heavy armor engineering.
